Jason varitek, batting 7th- finally made the Red Sox 1st out of the game after 6 batters had reached, 5 of those scored.  It is now 6-1 Sox on the strength of 3 1st inning doubles by Lugo, Ortiz, & Lowell.

Josh Beckett hit Vladimir Guererro in the 1st on the hand knocking him out of the game. Warnings were issued to both benches so their would not be retaliation by the Angels, to which Angels manager Mike Scocia was ciruously upset about since now if his pitcher happens to hit anybody or even throw inside unintentially- he'll be thrown out.
